Hermitage Plantation pay and muster roll, 1864.

Pay and muster roll for contraband slaves working on Hermitage Plantation. The pay and muster roll lists 118 named slaves and records the hours they worked, their monthly pay, the amount paid, amount due, etc. These freedmen are listed with their adopted surnames. On the payroll is a note to the effect that the slaves (referred to as "the Hands") were discouraged by the wet weather and are likely to not perform as well under such conditions.

Capt. Henry B. Fitch was a U.S. army officer of the 75th New York Infantry Regiment during the Civil War. He operated Hermitage Plantation in St. Charles Parish, La., when the area was occupied during the Civil War.
